Aurum

Aurum was developed for screening at Melburne Design Week 2020. Co-directed with Georgia Nowak, Aurum traverses layers of history and mythology to examine our complex relationship with gold. A symbol of power and a unit of value, the lure of gold has shaped civilisations since ancient times. Aurum juxtaposes today’s extraction and production processes against a tangled history revealing a story of obsession and the power of a single material to transform societies.

Aurum was the winner of the Melbourne Design Week 2020 Award and has since been acquired and exhibited by the National Gallery of Victoria.

Filmed on Kuwarra Country and Wajuk Country (Western Australia) as well as Wathaurong Country (Victoria), we pay our respects to the traditional owners of the lands, and acknowledge the significant impact incurred through two centuries of gold extraction.
